The Gravediggers Series:
The Darkest Corner
Gone to Dust

Publisher’s Summary:

New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Liliana Hart’s first book in her sexy, suspenseful Gravediggers series, THE DARKEST CORNER, features an elite group of mysterious men who might be dead to the world, but are also tasked with saving it—and no one can ever know.

The Gravediggers aren’t exactly what they seem. They’re the most elite of the world’s fighting forces—and all they have in common is that they’ve been betrayed by the countries they’ve died for. Because they are dead. To their country, their military, and their families.

Sometimes the dead do rise…

Deacon Tucker is a dead man walking. A former black ops agent, he was disavowed and stripped of all honor before being recruited as a Gravedigger. But his honor and good name no longer matter, because no one knows he’s alive, and he’ll never get the recognition he deserves. His mission is simple: save the world or die trying. And for God’s sake, don’t ever fall in love. That’s a rule punishable by death. The kind of death a man can’t be brought back from.

Tess Sherman is the only mortuary in Last Stop, Texas. She has no idea how Deacon Tucker ended up in her funeral home, but she’ll eat her hat if he’s only a funeral home assistant. Deacon is dangerous, deadly, and drop-dead gorgeous. And she knows her attraction to him can only end in heartache.

Deacon is on a mission to stop the most deadly terror attack the world has ever known—what’s known as The Day of Destiny—a terrorist’s perfect day. But when he discovers Tess has skills he can use to stop them, he has to decide if he can trust her with secrets worth dying for. And most important, he has to decide if he can trust her with his heart.

My Thoughts:  Last Stop is a typical small-town in Texas.  Most people know more than they should about each other.  The things said in the Clip n’ Curl are outrageously funny and in-your-face embarrassing! Theodora, Tess’s mom owns the place.  She, in and of herself, is a woman who goes after what she wants and bluntly speaks her mind. She also has an addiction, some would say a sickness — she pilfers anything she can sell to play the casino. Tess helps her mother on Fridays, also visiting with Tatiana, her grandmother, while there.

The town women talk openly discussing Cal Dougherty’s (town sheriff) seeming attraction to Tess.  They’ve all grown up in this small town, so everyone has an opinion. This scene is priceless, giving the reader the opportunity to see Tess, Theodora, Tatiana and town-folk in action. After Cal leaves her at the Clip n’ Curl she is the focus of attention.

“He’d be an excellent choice for you, Tess,’ her mother said by way of greeting. “He seems very stable. Though I’ve heard he’s not the  most endowed, if you get my drift.” Theodora waggled her eyebrows and pointed to her privates.

“Very subtle, Mama. I think everyone gets the drift.”

….”You’re looking a bit peaked today, Tess. I’ve got some of my vitamin juice in the fridge if you want some.”

Kind reader, her vitamin juice is all the rage.  Everyone who comes into the salon, grabs one.  It’s laced with Vodka!

This town is all inclusive.  Crystal, daughter to Bobby and Lynette Rose, belongs to a nice blue-collared family.  Crystal is more suited to the Addams Family.  Her black hair is shaved completely on one side of her head, the other side is dyed a brilliant blue; she’s loaded with piercings, everywhere.  Yes, everywhere.  She also works at the Clip ‘n Curl. People stare at the girl, but she does a mean set of nails, also adding the fabric of the town.

Tess Sherman, a smart-talking, sassy redhead whose temper can get quite out of hand, would rather own the funeral home she manages.  Last Stop, the small town she’s lived in all her life, hardly has enough people die to keep the home working. Nevertheless, Eve Winters purchases the place, leaving her in charge. She then does all manner of renovations, and employs five hunks.  For sometime, Tess has had her eye on Deacon Tucker, but she’s not the kind of girl he’d be interested in.  Tess is curious why Eve Winters bought the place and all these men came to work for her.  Tess figures they are probably doing something wrong.  One night her suspicions become real…putting herself directly in the line of danger. Something in Tess shifts…She becomes more and more suspicious and more and more drawn to the life it offers.  She suspects wrong doing, but when she learns about the operation around her, she’s blown away.

Six men working for an agency even the President of the United States doesn’t know about, are dead, as far as the world knows.  They are very much alive, however, working with an agency to stop the real monsters of the world in their evil plans to kill, strike terror, panic and havoc so governments collapse. Their base is the mortuary in Last Stop, close enough to get where needed, and off the beaten path. You will enjoy getting to know these driven men.  They, I’m sure, will have their own stories in the sequels to come.

Deacon Tucker has been watching Tess for two years.  Cameras are in every room.  He hears her talking to herself, sees her working, hears her conversations with her best friend Miller.  She is driving him crazy.  His life is all about control.  He does fine, but with Tess, all he wants to do is ravish her.  Both are eyeing what they see as eye-candy — neither acting on it.  Who will break first?  Yep, a hilarious read, indeed!

This well-written quick-paced, edgy story has it all.  It is snarky, with dialogue hilariously outrageous at times.  It also packs plenty of suspense and nail-biting danger, including some passionate scenes–these two are well-matched!  Story aside, it made me decide not to be embalmed.  You’ll see what I mean when you read the book. Cremation is my preference!
