About the Story: Widowed and destitute, Edwina White takes a position as governess in a remote village in the north of England—in a haunted house. She’s so desperate that she’ll take anything, and besides, she doesn’t believe in ghosts. Little does she know that her new employer is the seducer who lied and deceived her many years ago.

Sir Richard Ballister inherited an estate with a ghost and a curse, and every governess he hires leaves within a week. Finally, a woman desperate enough to stay arrives on his doorstep—but she’s the seductress who dropped him many years earlier for a richer man.

The last thing Richard and Edwina want is to work together, but they have no choice. Can they overcome the bitterness of the past in time to unravel a centuries-old knot and end the Christmas curse?

My Thoughts: I am never disappointed when I read one of Barbara Monajem’s stories. I love how she gets right into the story and action from the first sentence:

Wanted: respectable, fearless widow to serve as governess to two children in remote Lancashire location. Spartan conditions, haunted house, fair pay. Inquire at the Duck’s Head, Rawden.

This tells me right away that the poster of the solicitation is either a peculiar person and doesn’t even have a post or he/she only wants a governess understand the reality of the position. It also tells the reader that some delicious paranormal happenings will be part of this story!

Who would be crazy enough or desperate enough to apply for such post? Edwina apparently was. So desperate that even when her new employer was someone she’d rather forget, having known him some 12 years back, she didn’t back down. Edwina was made of sterner stuff and as we find, a whole lot more.

Haunted? Ghosts? How ridiculous a thought, but Edwina, Sir Richard, little John and Lizzie eventually truly believed. Of that the ghost was thankful, for if she were to move this story beyond the first page she had to get them to believe and time was running short. Doesn’t this just capture your imagination?

Barbara Monajem enjoys weaving the paranormal into her writing as I love reading it. I’ve enjoyed many of her books and novellas where she adds this spicy ingredient making a Regency Romance more than a memorable read.

Author Bio from web site Barbara Monajem is the award-Barbara-Monajem-300winning author of the Bayou Gavotte paranormal mysteries, as well as nine Regency novellas (some with magic, which she finds irresistible). She lives near Atlanta, Georgia with her husband and an ever-shifting population of relatives, friends, and feline strays. She loves to hear from readers. You can find her on Facebook, Twitter, and of course her website.
