ABOUT LUCK BE A LADY
LUCK BE A LADY in this fourth sexy novel in the Rules for the Reckless series!
THE WALLFLOWER They call her the “Ice Queen.” Catherine Everleigh is London’s loveliest heiress, but a bitter lesson in heartbreak has taught her to keep to herself. All she wants is her birthright—the auction house that was stolen from her. To win this war, she’ll need a powerful ally. Who better than infamous and merciless crime lord Nicholas O’Shea? A marriage of convenience will no doubt serve them both.
THE CRIME LORD Having conquered the city’s underworld, Nick seeks a new challenge. Marrying Catherine will give him the appearance of legitimacy—and access to her world of the law-abiding elite. No one needs to know he’s coveted Catherine for a year now—their arrangement is strictly business, free from the troubling weaknesses of love. Seduction, however, is a different matter—an enticing game he means to ensure she enjoys, whether she wishes to or not…
My Review: I enjoyed what the author did in book 3, Lady Be Good where the crѐme de la crѐme from the west end of London meets east end, a less than desirable area of town. Catherine, from the west end, had formed a friendship with Lady Lilah, niece of Nicholas O’Shea. Lady Lilah was brought up by her notorious Irish uncle where she learned to be a thief, taught by none other than her uncle.
Catherine, as a person, changed a lot in book 3. And was a compelling secondary character. She has more changes in store for her in book 4. Catherine loved the auction building and work her father had left her after he passed. Peter, her brother, also inherited half — he was partner in the company. Where Catherine had no desire to marry, just continue with the auction company, her brother wanted differently. And as long as she wasn’t married she couldn’t enforce her half-share of ownership and authority to make decisions.
Peter was up to no good with the company. Catherine, if she were honest with herself, is the auction house. She measures her worth by her work. (Sound familiar?) So when she finds out he’s been tinkering with the books she needs to save what is left. Peter has other interests, political ones, and he was ready to do anything to obtain it. In fact, his goals were ALL political and he needed money. He intended to sell the company or make Catherine marry someone who would help him climb the political ladder. William Pilcher, was rather a scarecrow and very distasteful to Catherine, so being business-minded, she contacted Nicholas O’Shea with a marriage of sorts, where they could divorce in five years.
Nick was intrigued with the women, in fact, he’d had his eye on her since his sister had started working for her as one of the Everleigh girls (book 3). Our hero, has an Archille’s heel. He helps those downtrodden, given the short-end of the stick and women who are in need of help. And Catherine was very much in need of help. He accepted her proposal with a few additional twists, since he, too, was a sharp businessman and found he could benefit, as well.
The read was delightfully entertaining, a series you can definitely get your teeth into. Passion, seduction, naiveté, danger and intrigue will titillate the most discerning reader who also enjoys a love story dealing with societal restraints, poverty and personal prejudice. Catherine and Nicholas are well matched even though Catherine prefers independence with personal freedom. Nicholas definitely is the alpha hero, a bit ruthless when necessary. He is driven to protect his own. And Catherine is his, whether she admits it or not.
