Once a Wallflower, at Last His Love

About the Story: Responsible, practical Miss Hermione Rogers, has been crafting stories as the notorious Mr. Michael Michaelmas and selling them for a meager wage to support her siblings. The only real way to ensure her family’s ruinous debts are paid, however, is to marry. Tall, thin, and plain, she has no expectation of success.

In London for her first Season she seizes the chance to write the tale of a brooding duke. In her research, she finds Sebastian Fitzhugh, the 5th Duke of Mallen, who unfortunately is perfectly affable, charming, and so nicely… configured… he takes her breath away. He lacks all the character traits she needs for her story, but alas, any duke will have to do.

Sebastian Fitzhugh, the 5th Duke of Mallen has been deceived so many times during the high-stakes game of courtship, he’s lost faith in society women. Yet, after a chance encounter with Hermione, he finds himself intrigued. Not a woman he’d normally consider beautiful, the young lady’s practical bent, her forthright nature and her tendency to turn up in the oddest places has his interests… roused. He’d like to trust her, he’d like to do a whole lot more with her too, but should he?

My Thoughts: Christi Caldwell never fails to create a story that makes me cry. I’ll be reading along and then bam, my throat closes down, tears well in my eyes and I feel such heartache. She’s a master who takes a simple, forthright idea, strikes a match, molds characters within this story’s marvelous flowing plot, then grips the heart and squeezes ever so gently.

Her story delves into our inner nature. We all need to protect those we love. We also protect ourselves by trying to live vicariously. In this case, Hermione, the heroine, understood life through the stories she herself creates as an author. I might add, that I, too, live vicariously through the stories I read.

I am always guaranteed a story that pulls my heartstrings and nod vigorously that the author has it right. In this story she has poured her heart, sharing with all of us her love of her special needs son. Christi, you have my full admiration and Rory is one lucky boy!

Words flow from the page totally engaging. The story is driven forward by its absorbing characters who are well-defined and totally engaging as the story unfolds with words of wisdom I take to heart.

Polite Society had such sway in people’s lives during the Regency period. Has it changed any? Our ideas are shaped by what others think. Is that not true? Women’s talents were kept hidden, sometimes even from husbands. Does this not happen today? Women’s talents were underestimated then and are in the present time. Romance authors most definitely provide, not only an engaging, entertaining tale, but provides manna to the soul!

This book is as charming as the previous ones I’ve read in this series. Thank you, Christi Caldwell, for sharing with your readers who you are.

While sitting in her graduate school apartment at the University of Connecticut, Christi decided to set aside her notes and try her hand at writing romance. She believes the most perfect heroes and heroines have imperfections and she rather enjoys tormenting them before crafting a well-deserved happily ever after!

Christi makes her home in Southern Connecticut where she spends her time writing, chasing around her feisty six-year old son and caring for her twin princesses in training!

  1. I am honored, touched, and truly grateful for the words you’ve shared here, Eileen. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for not only reading and reviewing, but conveying through your emotion, the essence of my work on a level that humbles me, as the author.

Eileen, I always feel that Christi pours her heart and soul into her books and that is why I think they resonate with me. I’m working my way through the Scandalous Seasons series and have this one to look forward to. I’m not sure how she manages to be such a prolific writer with all the other responsibilities she has.

  3. She is indeed a wonder.
