About the Story: Gwyneth Carswell, an English lady banished by her father to the harsh Scottish Highlands, wants nothing more than to take her young son away from the violence of two fighting clans–her own distant kin, the MacIrwins, and their enemies, the MacGraths.

She risks everything to rescue the fierce MacGrath warrior from the battlefield where he’s left for dead by her clan. She only knows she is inexplicably drawn to him and he wants peace as she does. When her clan learns of her betrayal, they seek vengeance. Dare she trust the enemy more than her own family?

Laird Alasdair MacGrath is driven to end two-hundred years of feuding with the MacIrwins. But by taking in and protecting Lady Gwyneth and her son, he provokes more attacks from his mortal enemy. As the danger and conflict surrounding them escalate, Alasdair and Gwyneth discover an explosive passion neither of them expected. With the arrival of a powerful man from her past, a horrible decision confronts her–give up her son or the man she loves.

This book was on the Amazon overall top 100 bestseller list at #47. It has been #1 in historical romance, Scottish historical romance, and Scottish historical fiction. #8 on the overall Nook Bestseller list at B&N. #2 in historical romance at iTunes.

My Thoughts: Vonda Sinclair brought the Highlands to life—the passion, violence, pride of country and honor of an honorable laird. She created a wonderfully ardent love story in the rugged country of the Scottish highlands. It kept me well entertained with the intense and passionate relationship developing between Alasdair and Gwyneth.

Alasdair MacGrath was taken aback about the way he felt about Gwyneth. He needed to protect her, for she with her healing ways had saved his life. He wasn’t desirous of remarriage after his first wife died nor did he need an English woman who had suffered depravity and the wrong of man’s lust. Destiny plays its role and they are drawn together. Their love fairly sizzled from the narrator’s voice in Gaelic words.

Gwyneth is a woman I could admire. After becoming pregnant, denied marriage, and disowned by her family, she took care of herself and her son. She was a wonderful mother who would do anything for her son. She learned to be a healer, living with an old woman in the highlands, managing well enough. She hated the killing. It all seemed so senseless to her. This sentiment leads her to make some very poor decisions.

This story is powerful in its message—love is really all that matters when all is said and done. This is the challenge that confronts Gwyneth. She struggles with what she needs as a person and what she wants for those she loves. The flame that burns between two people cannot be denied. Sinclair very powerfully makes this point in her thrilling, suspenseful, action-packed Highland romance. This series will be a must-read for me this year.  A highly recommended read or listen for all you lassies who love adventure and passion of the Scottish Highlands.

Andrew Bryan’s characterization of voices was extremely well done. He brings the characters very much to life when coupled with the sparkling dialog and easily shifts from accent to accent between the characters. His voice for the Laird held much power and confidence. His voices were all distinct and I could easily follow who was speaking. Little Rory speaks with an English accent at the outset of the story, but by the end he took on the brogue of the Scots. When not in dialog mode, I would have preferred a less soothing and regulated narrating voice for this particular story for it is full of action, fear, violence, pain, passion and fire from its players.

Vonda SinclairAbout the Author: Vonda Sinclair’s favorite indulgent pastime is exploring Scotland, from Edinburgh to the untamed and windblown north coast. She also enjoys creating hot, Highland heroes and spirited lasses to drive them mad. Her historical romance novels have won an EPIC Award and a National Readers’ Choice Award. She lives with her amazing and supportive husband in the mountains of North Carolina where she is no doubt creating another Scottish story.

His voiceover skills include several accents: Scottish, Irish, British, Scandinavian, New York (Brooklyn), Russian, Cockney, German, French, South African.

Great review! I have this waiting on my iPad and reading your thoughts on it, makes me want to bring it to the top. Thanks.

  2. I’m eager to start the next one when it’s available. I’ve changed gears a little and listening to A Jane Austen Daydream by Scott D. Southard. As my older sister used to say when we were young, “it’s a scream.” Funny beyond words. I’ll probably be reviewing in 4-5 days.
