About the Story: New York Times bestselling author J.A. Jance brings her trademark breakneck pace to this fun and exciting e-novella, where fan favorite Ali Reynolds takes on double responsibilities as both sleuth and bride. Ali Reynolds is finally getting married to her longtime love B. Simpson. They wanted a simple Christmas Eve wedding, but nothing is ever simple with Ali. Even as a motley crew of her friends—Leland Brooks, Sister Anselm, and others—descend on Vegas, the bride-to-be finds herself juggling last-minute wedding plans and a mystery in the form of a stray miniature dachshund. Ali’s grandson rescues the little dog, but Ali’s not in the market for a new pet right before her honeymoon, and leaves no stone unturned in hunting for the dog’s owner. But what she finds is more than just a shaggy dog story…Bella’s elderly owner has vanished, and her son seems to be behind it. So it’s Ali and B. to the rescue—and still making it to the church on time!

My Thoughts: This was a short story, easily read during a lunch hour. I haven’t read any of J. A. Jance’s work, so this gave me a good idea of how she writes.

I enjoyed her writing style and the way she sets the scene. With such a short story, there is little developing of characters, however, readers following the series would be already familiar with many of the main characters.

The notes following the story were most interesting, because it gives me a sense of how important animals have been in the author’s life.

The beginning of the story explained who everyone was in the wedding party. This was Ali Reynolds third wedding, so it wasn’t the focus here, although I could feel how much she loved her husband-to-be.

The story really was about Bella, the dog, and how an animal can sneak behind your defenses and steal your heart. Even when you don’t have the means to take care of it, you’ll sacrifice to give them the best you can.

I really would like to read one of her other books in this series, because she’s a very well established author and obviously doing something right.

List of books in the Ali Reynolds Series:

  1. Edge of Evil
  2. Web of Evil
  3. Hand of Evil
  4. Cruel Intent
  5. Trial by Fire
  6. Fatal Error
  7. Left for Dead
  8. Deadly Stakes
