Spies and Traitors; Love and Betrayal!
My Review: This book was no less spectacular than the three preceding ones. It carries us further through the events of the American Revolution introducing new characters and more intrigue. As characters were introduced I’d check the internet to know if these military officers existed or not. Ms. Hines builds such a convincing story that you have to remind yourself that it is fiction, albeit the historical characters were real and the events of the war were, too.
Ms. Hines captures the resistance of the South to be swept into the revolution leading to the capture of Charles Town. And she captures again the new spirit which erupts after the turn of Benedict Arnold to the British side.
Her well-developed characters express poignantly the terror and strife of war. Even the most villainous characters were developed to show they, too, had a softer side and not all villainous actions can be painted with the same brush.
When I finished the book I felt sorrow for such a war pitting neighbor against neighbor, taking sides – either Loyalist or Rebel, the secret spying that took place to try to win an advantage, all the lives that were destroyed through loss of family.
With those thoughts I concluded we should take pride and care of our young nation, not yet 225 years old. So much blood has spilt giving us the life we enjoy today. We stand upon its foundation and should fervently protect it and what it stands for—life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for ALL—always striving to reach this goal.
I encourage all history buffs to read this series. I highly recommend it. Book 5 should be released sometime in 2015 concluding the period of the war. This series has prodded me to further research this dangerous time in our history and understand the events that made the United States a nation. Additionally, I look forward to reading Ms. Hines series Tides of Charleston, also dealing with the American Revolution.

Note: Jerri and I have exchanged a few emails and she shared some information I thought to pass along. In her words:
I love history, especially the American Revolution. It has fascinated me for a long time. Our founding fathers did an excellent job in creating our country, especially after studying other revolutions. Usually, chaos follows. Although they had challenges, the Founding Fathers had a vision.
I have mixed historical figures in with my imagination in my books. I have changed a few names around such as Rupert Arnett I took from the real life Robert Townsend as well as Giles Cooper I modeled after Austin Roe. I didn’t feel comfortable changing their life history so I just modeled my characters after them.
