About The Author: Author Jessica Scott is a career army officer, mother of two daughters, and a wife to a career Naval Commanding Officer. She has written for the New York Times At War Blog, PBS Point of View Regarding War, and IAVA. She deployed to Iraq in 2009 as part of OIF/New Dawn and has served as a company commander at Fort Hood, Texas. She is pursuing a doctorate in Sociology, and has recently been featured as one of Esquire Magazine’s Americans of the Year for 2012.
About The Story: The idea of her husband Vic, a sergeant in the army leaving, another deployment to Iraq, scared Nicole senseless. She tried to keep a brave front, tried not to cry, holding back tears while he was around. She needed to be brave for him. But she knew she couldn’t escape the wait, the fear for him while he was over there. She just needed him to be safe and come back home to her.
Vic Carponti was the one they could count on cracking a joke and making a nightmare seemingly less. He was great in combat, always backing up his men and watching out for them. His wife was expecting him home for Christmas; he had his leave then, but the men really needed him right now. Too much bad was happening. The trouble with so much bad happening was it was hard to keep in contact with his wife. He avoided his calls on Skype. He didn’t want to tell her all the bad and he couldn’t keep the jokes coming when shit was hitting the fan.
Review: This story was very well crafted and carried an emotional punch with the telling – certainly worth the read. Obviously, the author is well qualified to write the story she has. It drew a very convincing and believable story including a good idea of what upheavals take place in the lives of army families when partners are deployed—perhaps something we need better understand as our warriors come back from war. The author has also provided an excerpt from her next book in the series, Coming Home.
