Carrie Slayton is a woman who wants a career more than writing at the Chicago Sun-Times for the society page. She wants to write something that has more meaning in life and interesting at the same time. She decides to quit her job, but her boss promises that if she can get an interview with the hottest new author, Finn Dalton, who refuses to be interviewed, he would offer her any other position she would like. That’s incentive enough for Carrie – she begins her search to locate him.
Finn Dalton lives in Alaska, loves the life there and doesn’t want to be bothered with people prying into his life. He wrote his first book to share the beauty of Alaska and to encourage people to become active in nature. He didn’t anticipate that his book would be so successful.
When Carrie locates Finn close to Burbank, Alaska, she flies up to Alaska to see if she can introduce herself to him. She is able to locate someone who admits that he knows him, although reluctantly. He owns a plane and flies Carrie to the log cabin into the middle of no where and promises to come back for her the next day. Once she’s there, sparks fly. Finn has no idea what to do with her. He can’t leave her out in the weather, but doesn’t want her in his cabin, in his space.
Both Carrie and Finn are characters that the reader can warm to and can relate to how each want to live. Carrie wants to get the interview and Finn will not give it to her. The magic begins when they walk out to the frozen lake for some fresh air and look at the sky – full of stars – somehow a magic moment for both of them.
